WILDLIFE SAFARI 02
The plains surrounding Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu Eco Park are among the best safari destinations in Sri Lanka, especially renowned for their thriving elephant populations. This region hosts the largest recurrent gathering of Asian elephants in the world, with herds numbering in the hundreds converging around the Minneriya Tank during the dry season. These gatherings include impressive tuskers, protective matriarchs, and playful baby elephants, offering an extraordinary wildlife spectacle. Minneriya National Park not only offers this breathtaking elephant congregation but is also home to a variety of other species. On your safari, you may encounter golden jackals, purple-faced langurs, spotted deer, ruddy mongooses, and a wide array of resident and migratory birds, making it a true haven for biodiversity.
Kaudulla National Park, once centered around an ancient irrigation reservoir built by King Mahasen, has now become another vital refuge for elephants and similar wildlife. It shares the same migratory elephant population as Minneriya and offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
Hurulu Eco Park, declared a biosphere reserve in 1977, serves as a crucial habitat and corridor for elephants during their seasonal movements. The park's dense forest and open clearings provide fantastic opportunities to spot elephants in a more forested setting.
Together, these three parks offer one of the most exciting safari experiences in the country, ideal for wildlife lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking close encounters with Sri Lanka's majestic wildlife.
