Wild life Safari
The Minneriya National Park’s primary purpose is to secure the catchment of the Minneriya tank, thus preserving the diverse ecosystem it sustains and the abundance of wildlife frequenting the waterway. The area being a natural treasure trove of local fauna and flora, including migratory birds, should be on the to-do-list of any serious outdoor enthusiast. During the dry season the park provides an assembly point for herds of elephants, who make their annual excursion from miles away, to congregate at the watering hole.
Historically Kaudulla was one of the 16 irrigation tanks built by King Mahasen. Following a period of abandonment it was reconstructed in 1959. It now attracts and supports a variety of plant and animal life, including large mammals, fish and reptiles.
