Wasgamuwa Elephant Safari

This experience is all about discovering and showcasing paths less treaded, roads less travelled and areas less explored. The Wasgamuwa National Park is located off the Kandy – Mahiyanganaya Road. The park is teeming with flora and fauna, dominated by herds of Sri Lankan elephants (Elephas maximus maximus) who is one of the three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant. If you are lucky, you might spot a sloth bear as well. On top of wildlife, this park has historic significance as well as harbouring many legends and folklores. One such tale is the story of Yudaganawa or Yudaganapitiya located within the park, where the final battle between King Ravana & King Rama is believed to have taken place. Still the area is hard / scorched, and cannot be cultivated. The soil is very similar to Ussangoda Ramayana site where there was believed to be a lot of destruction and turmoil that took place during the same war. We drive to the Kirioya park entrance after lunch. Together with your host or field guide you embark on your adventure into the park at 2.30 PM. As we enter there is good chance you will be greeted by Gray Langurs (Hanuman Monkeys) who are a quite shy but curious monkey species. We make our way deeper into the park. Make sure to keep you ears and eyes open for birds, butterflies, deer, buffalo, elephants or maybe even a sloth bear?
