Wildlife Thrives at Water Garden Sigiriya

We are delighted to share an exciting wildlife encounter from right here at Water Garden Sigiriya. Recently, our team spotted an elusive Eurasian Otter, locally known as Diya Balla, gracefully navigating the waterways that weave through our resort. This rare and vulnerable species is not commonly seen in Sri Lanka, as it flourishes only in pristine, unpolluted waters. Its presence here is not only a magical sighting but also a powerful testament to the health and vitality of our ecosystem.

Encounters such as this remind us that Water Garden Sigiriya is more than a luxury retreat, it is part of a living, breathing natural world. From the very beginning, we have sought to strike a balance between refined hospitality and environmental stewardship, and moments like this otter sighting reaffirm the importance of our efforts.

The richness of wildlife around the property is remarkable. From the verandas of our villas, guests can often spot the Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, the brilliant White-breasted Kingfisher, or even a peacock unfurling its feathers in the gardens. At dusk, the elusive loris may make an appearance in the treetops, while the gentle chorus of frogs and crickets creates a soundtrack that is uniquely Sri Lankan. The waterways themselves are alive with aquatic life, while the surrounding wilderness occasionally brings majestic elephants into view, a humbling reminder of the wild landscapes that border our sanctuary.

Every encounter tells a story of coexistence. The presence of such species underscores our commitment not only to preserving biodiversity but also to ensuring that guests can experience authentic, undisturbed nature alongside modern comforts. Whether it is the thrill of spotting a rare animal or the quiet joy of watching birds at sunrise, these moments add depth and meaning to every stay.

At Water Garden Sigiriya, we believe that true luxury lies in connection with history, with culture, and most importantly, with nature. With each visit, our guests are invited not simply to observe, but to become part of this thriving environment. The otter’s playful swim is just one glimpse of the unique and unforgettable experiences that await here, where wildlife and hospitality flourish side by side.
